Virgin Atlantic has signed a definitive, multi-year commercial agreement with Joby Aviation, converting a 2025 partnership announcement into a binding framework establishing Virgin Atlantic as Joby's exclusive airline partner for air taxi services in the UK; no financial consideration is disclosed, and there is no equity transaction.
Joby Aviation is a Santa Cruz-based eVTOL aircraft developer listed on NYSE (JOBY), founded by JoeBen Bevirt. In Q1 2026, it reported revenue of $24.2 million (€22.1 million), a net loss of approximately $110 million (€100.7 million), and held $2.5 billion (€2.29 billion) in cash. Its 2026 revenue guidance of $105–$115 million derives almost entirely from its acquired BLADE passenger helicopter business rather than eVTOL operations.
Joby is currently in Stage 5 of the FAA Type Certification process, with approval expected around September 2026; UK certification is progressing under the Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement between the FAA and the UK CAA. Virgin Atlantic is a UK long-haul carrier co-owned by Virgin Group and Delta Air Lines, which holds a 49% stake and maintains its own separate multi-city US eVTOL partnership with Joby. Virgin Atlantic's standalone turnover and EBITDA are not publicly disclosed. Advisors: none mentioned.
The structural driver is distribution risk, not technology risk. Joby has the most advanced eVTOL certification in the industry, having completed point-to-point flights between JFK and Manhattan and secured White House backing for its eVTOL Integration Pilot Program across 10 US states. What it lacks is a ready-made consumer booking channel in the UK. Virgin Atlantic's platforms and brand recognition in London and Manchester give Joby a distribution infrastructure it could not build independently ahead of launch, materially de-risking the post-certification revenue ramp.
For Virgin Atlantic, the agreement is a low-capital bet on becoming the default UK access point for urban air mobility before any competitor can sign an equivalent exclusivity. The Manchester–Leeds 15-minute and Heathrow–Central London 8-minute routes address the single most congested and time-sensitive surface journeys in the UK's two largest city regions, not premium niches, but mass-market pain points.
The verdict: the binding exclusivity converts reputational alignment into a structural competitive moat the question is whether FAA and UK CAA certification timelines hold, given that every month of delay extends Joby's $340–370 million semi-annual cash burn without generating the eVTOL revenue the valuation requires.
