Vertical Aerospace has announced financing commitments of $100 million from Mudrick Capital Management and Yorkville Advisors, comprising $35 million from existing institutional backers and new investors, with Jefferies acting as financial adviser; the transaction is subject to definitive agreements and represents the company's latest capital raise following an £850 million comprehensive financing package closed in April 2026.
Vertical Aerospace (NYSE: EVTL) is a Bristol-based eVTOL aircraft developer founded by Stephen Fitzpatrick in 2016, developing the six-seat Valo aircraft targeting commercial passenger services from 2029 with a hybrid variant following in 2030. The company has zero revenue as a pre-commercial platform; net cash used in operations was approximately $110–125 million in FY2025, with cash declining from $93 million to $58 million in Q1 2026 before the April package stabilised the balance sheet.
The company has approximately 1,500 conditional pre-orders from customers including American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow, GOL and Japan Airlines. It has received close to £50 million of UK government funding and is in advanced discussions about a further grant of up to £10 million. Vertical has completed all four phases of its piloted flight test programme including full two-way transition flight, demonstrated publicly at Farnborough in July 2026.
The structural driver is a certification timeline that requires sustained capital consumption ahead of any revenue. Vertical is targeting Critical Design Review completion by end-2026, certification-conforming aircraft build-and-test thereafter, and CAA type certification in 2029. That four-year capital requirement cannot be bridged by the original $850 million package alone if development timelines extend or testing phases require additional iterations.
The $100 million from existing shareholders Mudrick and Yorkville is structurally significant precisely because they are existing holders absorbing additional dilution: informed confidence from investors who know the programme status in detail, rather than new investors arriving on Farnborough publicity.
For the sector, Avolon's conditional pre-order gives Ireland's largest aircraft lessor a strategic stake in the Vertical programme. Avolon's position as a launch customer creates the commercial infrastructure, lessor capital, airline relationships and fleet financing, that would support Irish operator deployment of Valo aircraft if CAA certification is achieved on schedule.
