Rewinding to one of last year's shortlisted entrants, Spirit AeroSystems (Belfast) was named a finalist for the Aviation Innovation Award at the Aviation Industry Awards 2025, putting forward a manufacturing breakthrough that has the potential to fundamentally alter how aircraft wing structures are produced and assembled across the industry.

The company's entry centred on the successful development and demonstration of a one-piece resin infused wing demonstrator, taken to Technology Readiness Level 6 — a threshold that signals the transition from laboratory validation to real-world applicability.

The achievement represented not an incremental refinement of existing methods but a wholesale rethinking of how a complete aircraft torque box, including an integral leading edge, could be produced directly from the mould.

What makes the innovation consequential is what it removes from the process entirely. Traditional wing assembly relies on complex, time-intensive joining and fastening procedures that add cost, introduce potential failure points, and extend production timelines. Spirit AeroSystems' approach eliminates that assembly stage, producing a structurally complete component in a single manufacturing operation.

The company's work demonstrated that the engineering ambition behind the demonstrator was matched by a rigorous development methodology, with each stage of progress validated against internationally recognised readiness criteria. The result is a concept that has moved decisively beyond theoretical promise into demonstrable, evidenced capability.

Spirit AeroSystems' shortlisting for the Aviation Innovation Award reflected the judging panel's assessment that its resin infusion breakthrough represented a credible and significant contribution to the future of aircraft manufacturing — one with implications that extend well beyond Belfast's production facilities into the broader global aerospace supply chain.

As the Aviation Industry Awards 2026 cycle gets underway, the question facing Ireland's and the wider aviation community is who will match the scale of ambition that Spirit AeroSystems brought to the 2025 shortlist.
