Ryanair has emerged as the world’s most CO2-efficient major airline, emitting just 63 grammes of CO2 per available seat kilometre in 2024 – a 1.9% improvement from the previous year. This puts it ahead of Southwest and Delta among the largest carriers, though smaller rivals like Wizz Air remain greener overall. Airlines face mounting pressure to decarbonise, but the path to net zero remains steep. Sustainable aviation fuel production is expected to reach only two million tonnes this year against a 311 million tonne jet fuel demand in 2025.

Despite EU blending targets rising to 70% SAF by 2050, insufficient supply threatens progress. The industry’s efficiency gains highlight operational advances, yet transformative decarbonisation will demand far more investment and fuel innovation to keep pace with targets.
