Neste and United Airlines have broadened their partnership to provide sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to George Bush Intercontinental Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and Dulles International Airport. United becomes the first commercial airline to use SAF at these hubs, blending it with conventional jet fuel to meet operational specifications.

Deliveries began in July 2025 at Houston, with Newark and Dulles following in September. The fuel is transported through existing pipeline infrastructure from Neste’s Houston SAF terminals. The expansion builds on United’s existing SAF use at Chicago O’Hare and San Francisco International, supported by local policy incentives.

SAF, produced from 100% renewable materials such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle. Neste’s SAF is compatible with existing aircraft engines and infrastructure, with a current global production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year, set to increase to 2.2 million tons by 2027.

United’s Chief Sustainability Officer, Lauren Riley, highlighted that wider SAF adoption depends on supportive state and federal policies, while Neste’s Carl Nyberg emphasised the need for incentives to accelerate SAF production and help the aviation industry achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The agreement reinforces both companies’ long-term commitment to sustainable aviation, demonstrating scalable solutions for lowering emissions across key US operations while promoting market growth for renewable aviation fuels.
