Engine MRO provider MTU Maintenance has been awarded a long-term engine maintenance contract by Taiwan's EVA Air, covering shop visits for the CFM56-5B engines powering the carrier's fleet of 17 Airbus A321-200 aircraft and marking MTU's return to the Taiwanese market following its last contract with a Taiwanese carrier in 2016.

According to Aviation Business News, all shop visits will be conducted at MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, the company's specialist narrowbody engine facility in China. EVA Air will also have access to MTU Maintenance Lease Services' spare engine pool during shop visits if additional support is required.

The agreement marks the first time EVA Air has selected an independent provider for comprehensive engine maintenance on exclusive terms, having previously relied on original equipment manufacturers for engine MRO.

Steve Liu, executive vice president of engineering and maintenance at EVA Air, said MTU Maintenance's technical expertise and extensive capabilities had convinced the airline it was the right partner. "MTU Maintenance's extensive capabilities and technical expertise convinced us that it is the right partner to entrust our CFM56-5Bs for reliable and expert service," he said.

Gert Wagner, president and chief executive of MTU Maintenance Zhuhai, said the contract represented a further building block in the facility's ambition to become the leading narrowbody engine MRO provider in the Asia-Pacific market. MTU Maintenance Zhuhai surpassed 5,000 shop visits in 2025.

In addition to CFM56 variants, the Zhuhai facility services LEAP-1A and -1B, IAE V2500 and Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM GTF engines. MTU also operates a dedicated PW1100G-JM facility in Jinwan, which the company describes as the world's largest MRO shop for narrowbody engines, with a combined capacity of more than 700 shop visits annually once fully ramped up.
