Engineering and consultancy firm Egis has appointed Shakir Khaja as aviation sector director for Europe, with the newly created role centred on driving growth across European airport markets and with particular emphasis on the UK and Ireland.

According to the Business Post, London-based Khaja joins from engineering firm Arcadis, where he served as senior director for the aviation sector. He brings more than 25 years of aviation experience and has previously led large-scale programmes at major airports including Heathrow, London City Airport and Fraport Greece.

Khaja said there was a clear opportunity to bring Egis's global aviation expertise together more cohesively across the UK, Ireland and wider Europe. "I'm looking forward to building on this foundation and helping establish Egis as a trusted advisor to airports as they address the challenges and opportunities ahead," he said.

Martin Vallance, transport and mobility consulting director at Egis UK, said Khaja combined deep technical understanding with strong commercial insight and a proven ability to deliver complex airport programmes across challenging environments.

Egis works with more than 100 airports across over 40 countries, including Dublin Airport, and provides services spanning the full airport development lifecycle from strategy and business case development through to planning, design, delivery and operational readiness.

The appointment follows Egis's announcement of plans to create 100 new engineering jobs in Ireland as infrastructure demand increases, underlining the firm's growing commitment to the Irish market. The company said the European aviation director role reflected its wider strategy to deepen its footprint across both the UK and Irish airport sectors.
