Industry NewsAerCap brings first Boeing 777-300ERSF converted freighters to Africa through Ethiopian Airlines deal
Dublin-headquartered AerCap Holdings N.V., the world's largest aircraft lessor, has signed lease agreements with Ethiopian Airlines for two Boeing 777-300ERSF converted freighters, introducing the aircraft type to Africa for the first time. The deal reinforces the growing strategic importance of high-capacity freighter aircraft as air cargo demand continues to expand across the continent.
PRNewswire reported that the agreement was announced on 24 March 2026, with deliveries scheduled for the second quarter of 2028. The Boeing 777-300ERSF, commonly referred to as "The Big Twin," will be operated exclusively by Ethiopian Airlines within Africa upon entry into service.
The aircraft offers 25% more capacity than smaller twin-engine long-haul freighters, making it a significant upgrade for carriers seeking to scale cargo operations efficiently on high-demand routes. Ethiopian Airlines operates flights to over 160 domestic and international destinations across five continents.
Aengus Kelly, chief executive officer of AerCap, said the company was delighted to deepen our long-standing partnership with Ethiopian Airlines — the first customer to operate this aircraft type in Africa — through this important transaction, adding that "the 777-300ERSF delivers significant cost efficiencies and will position Ethiopian Airlines to further expand its growing cargo platform.
Mesfin Tasew, group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, said the aircraft will significantly enhance our cargo capacity and efficiency, boosting trade in the region," and that the airline remains committed to investing in modern, sustainable solutions that cement our position in the global cargo market.
AerCap serves approximately 300 customers worldwide and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with offices in Shannon, Singapore, London, Dubai, and Shanghai, among other locations.
